Travel Section of the Calgary Sun
Riding the desert roads of Arizona
By MICHAEL PLATT, Calgary Sun (excerpt) "A trek to the remote eastern edge of the state (AZ) brings the BMW (bike) to Chiricahua National Monument, a Native spiritual site full of surreal volcanic hoodoos. It's about 600 years newer, but a similar sense of peace can be found nearby at the Dos Cabezas Spirit and Nature Retreat B & B, where you are greeted like family, bike and all. Guests at the handsome and isolated acreage stay in an adobe guest house built of mud in the 1800s -- and in the morning, owner Charmayne cooks possibly the tastiest breakfast in Arizona. A full stomach and a head full of motorcycling memories for the trip home. Arizona dreaming -- it's where I'll be this winter." --------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Friends......nothing butt the best..... at Dos Cabezas B & B

Our local deer come in just about every day for a drink. It's been very dry here this winter and spring. We also have some great yard birds at our feeder and we had a surprise flock of about 50 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS that landed here early morning a few days ago, evidently blown in from the valley into the mountains by the wind and snowstorm. We had an early, and FOS, female SCOTT'S ORIOLE about two weeks ago. Other notable birds every day are a great diversity of sparrow species: BLACK-CHINNED, LINCOLN'S, BREWER'S, CHIPPING, VESPER, BLACK-THROATED and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS; and also GREEN-TALIED TOWHEE, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, LARK BUNTINGS, NORTHERN FLICKERS, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, CANYON TOWHEE, CANYON WRENS, ROCK WRENS, PINE SISKENS, LESSER GOLDFINCH and WHITE-WINGED DOVES; five male CARDINALS and mates, along with several PYRRHULOXIA, contrasted beautifully with the YELLOW-HEADS against the snow on the ground. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MORE Friends...at the Dos Cabezas Mountain Gallery

Mr. Brakefield lived for many years in Dos Cabezas, his story to be found in the fascinating book, The Story of Dos Cabezas by Carol Wien and Phyllis de la Garza. --------------------------------------------------------------------- A Sampling of Guest Testimonials
Dec. 2010 From The Discovery Channel (producers of Planet Earth) "Wild Planet:North America" (to air 2012): "What can we say...after spending the better part of two weeks with you at Dos Cabezas, we feel like it is a second home to us. From the moment we arrived you guys made sure we had everything we needed. It was a wonderful experince for us. Often we are forced to stay in nondescript chain hotels with no character and charm, so to be able to stay at your retreat was a welcomed change. Much love...and mnay thanks and if we are in the area again we will be sure to come back!"
Dec. 2010 From Tucson: "We enjoyed our stay very much and the room was quite comfortble. Breakfast was excellent and our decision to stay with you (during the lunar eclipse) was very fortuitous because I learned it was cloudy in Tucson for most of the night. If we had stayed home or gone to Kitt Peak observatory, we may not have seen the eclipse at all!"
Dec. 2010 From Missouri City, Tx: "This is a Christmas we will remember. Thanks for your hospitality and generosity. The gifts were a very special touch! The breakfast, tour and history were all fabulous. Thanks for making our holiday special!"
Dec. 2010 From Sequim, WA: "A great holiday we had with you two great people. The tree and gifts totally unexpected were thoughtful and classey. Dos Cabezas B & B is a perfect base camp to use to visit the area. We shall do it again!
Jan. 2011 From Ft. Lauderdale, FL: "This was a most wonderful experience! It's my first time staying at a bed and breakfast. How wonderful! You were so warm and hospitable, we were treated like family. It is so peaceful here. Thank you for giving us a grand experience!"
Jan. 2011 From Scott Weidensaul, WOW Guest Speaker: "Thank you for four nights of peaceful sleep, bright stars and the gentle solitude of Dos Cabezas. And the mornings of delicious food, laughter, and hospitality. Staying here has been a delight and I can't wait to come back with my wife for a visit when I'm not working the birding festival."
